Anna Bernice (Kohn) Kadane
May 17, 1925-March 17, 2025
Anna Bernice (Kohn) Kadane passed away peacefully Monday at the age of 99. She was a native and long-time resident of Altoona, and the daughter of the late Sophia (Silverman) and Meyer Kohn.
She attended Altoona High School before matriculating to Northwestern University in Evanston, IL, where she majored in Education and was a member of the Sigma Delta Tau sorority, and finally graduating from Penn State. Mrs. Kadane also met the late Melvin Kadane, her future husband, in Altoona, where he was billeted for training before his service in the Signal Corps during World War II.
Mrs. Kadane was a significant contributor to the family business, The New Idea, traveling frequently to New York and working alongside her husband. Their long-term residence on Logan Boulevard was home to their three children. Mrs. Kadane was also an English teacher in the Altoona Area School District for more than 30 years.
She was an active member of the Temple Beth Israel congregation, serving as a Board Member, Religious School instructor and Principal, President of the Sisterhood organization and sponsor of the Temple Youth Group. Mrs. Kadane was also a lifetime dog lover, providing forever homes for many adopted canines.
She is survived by her three children, Cathy Dratman, Marcia Schilli and Jonathan Kadane, her five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at E. Merrill Smith Funeral Home, Inc., 2309 Broad Avenue, Altoona, PA 16601, Friday, March 21, 2025 from 9:00-10:00 am with a funeral service immediately following at 10 am. Private interment will be held at Mount Sinai Cemetery.
