Carl W. “Pappy” Dodson Aug. 18, 1928 – Jan. 7, 2025

Carl W. “Pappy” Dodson, 96, Altoona, passed away Tuesday at his residence.

Pappy was born in Altoona, son of the late Levi and Edna (Hanley) Dodson. On January 15, 1949, he married Betty Dunn, who preceded him in death.

He is survived by two sons: Terry Dodson and Tim (Sue) Dodson, all of Altoona; a daughter, Barbara (Dale) Day of Glen Burnie, MD; four grandchildren: Christina Day, Suzy (Greg) Vovak, Amy (Cole) Wilson, and Kenny (Jenna) Dodson; and four great-grandchildren: Taylor Culhane, Will Turiano, Alana Dodson and Alexis Dodson.

Pappy was a graduate of Altoona High School, served in the US Navy Reserves, and retired from Sylvania after 32 years of service.

He was a member of 28th Street Church of the Brethren.

Pappy enjoyed bowling, hunting, fishing, watching sports, especially Pittsburgh and Penn State teams. Most especially he enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s sporting and band events.

He was “Pappy” to everyone he met.

Friends will be received from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, January 18, 2025 at E. Merrill Smith Funeral Home, Inc., 2309 Broad Avenue, Altoona, PA 16601 where a funeral service will immediately follow at 3 p.m. by Pastor Barron Deffenbaugh. Interment will be at Grandview Cemetery.

The family requests that contributions be made to Central PA Humane Society, 1837 E. Pleasant Valley Blvd, Altoona, PA 16602 in Pappy’s memory.
