Obituary For Charles 'Fred' F. Leahey

Charles F. “Fred” Leahey Dec. 19, 1936-Dec. 9, 2022 Charles F. “Fred” Leahey, 85, Altoona, passed away Friday at UPMC Altoona following a brief illness. He was born in Lilly, the son of the late Christopher and Camille (Dierling) Leahey. Fred married Nancy C. Zimmerer on Sept. 2, 1957 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. Fred is survived by his loving wife of 65 years; a son, Thomas Leahey of FL; four daughters: Rebecca Duryea (Bill) of Altoona, Doreen Leonard (Richard) and Carolyn Simcox both of Woodstock, GA, Jeanne Bencker of Louisville, KY; six grandchildren: Crystal, Dustin, Angela, Adam, Kimberly and Christian; nine great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and his brother, Daniel Leahey (Debbie) of Altoona. He was preceded in death by a son, Gerald Leahey and his sister, Rose Fillman. Fred was a 1948 graduate of Altoona High School and later trained as a Master Welder. He retired from Conrail as a Master Welder with many years of service. Fred enjoyed playing golfing with his wife, Nancy. He loved to tinker and could fix just about anything. Friends will be received from Noon to 2 p.m. Friday, December 16, 2022 at E. Merrill Smith Funeral Home, Inc., 2309 Broad Avenue, Altoona, PA 16601 where a funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. by Fr. Kevin Qually, T.O.R. There will be additional visitation from 5-7 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home. Commital will be at St. Michael Cemetery, Loretto.
