Craig D. Schaffer

Sept. 12, 1956 - Oct. 2, 2025

Craig D. Schaffer, 69, Altoona, passed away Thursday at UPMC Presbyterian, Pittsburgh.

Craig was born in Reading, son of the late Leroy and Leona Mae (Fenstermacher) Schaffer. He married Kelley Jo Johnson.

He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Kelley; two sons: Christopher Schaffer (Dana) of Carlisle and Adam Schaffer (Holly) of Altoona; 3 grandchildren: Cody, Logan and Elizabeth Schaffer; a brother, Karey Schaffer (Marge) of Reading; and a sister, Marlene Price of Robesonia.

Craig was a graduate of Wilson High School in Reading.

He retired as a driver for Blair Senior Services and was previously a radio personality on many local radio stations for over 30 years.

Craig loved music and was a founding member, vocalist and bassist for The Spoon River Band.

He was a longtime baseball fan and coach.

Friends will be received from 2-3 p.m. on Saturday, October 11, 2025 at Vineyard Altoona Church, 801 Pleasant Valley Blvd, Altoona, PA 16602 where a funeral service will immediately follow at 3 p.m.

    I'm so sorry to hear this news—my sincere condolences to Kelley and the family. I played in the band "Your Dad's Friends" with Craig for several years. Craig was an amazing vocalist, a rock-solid bass player, and just one of the all-around best guys you'd ever be lucky enough to cross paths with. Rest easy, my friend. Thanks for giving me the honor of making music with you for a few years.

    Kim and I were so sorry to hear of Craig's passing. We will be out of town this weekend. Please accept our thoughts and prayers for you and your family. Craig touched many people's lives.
