Obituary For Shirley Ann Black

Shirley Ann (James) Black June 30, 1949 – March 12, 2023

Shirley Ann (James) Black, 73, of Mocksville, NC, died Sunday at her home, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.

She was born in Altoona, daughter of the late Jesse Willard and Audrey Lucille Chambers James.

Shirley is survived by her husband of 55 years, Carl Ross Black; two children, Dean Richard Black of Mocksville, NC and Kimberly Black Kerns (Todd Walker) of Mocksville, NC; three grandchildren, Haley Lynn Black, Cameron James Kerns (Autumn Pitlick), and Ryan Ross Kerns; her siblings, Joyce Carol Dougal (Ron) of Arizona, Sheldon James (Helen) of Michigan, Sara Kelley (Jim) of Michigan, Ellie Pucciarella (Rick) of Pennsylvania, and Nancy Mead (Brian) of Arizona; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Jesse James, Jr.

Mrs. Black was a member of the Prescott Frontier Days Rodeo in Arizona, where she served as Chairman of the Board, and was a very highly respected employee of the Prescott Veterans Administration. She enjoyed horseback riding, antiquing, and traveling with her family. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family, especially her grandkids.

Friends will be received from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday, March 20, 2023 at E. Merrill Smith Funeral Home, Inc. 2309 Broad Avenue, Altoona, PA 16601 where a funeral service will follow at 1 p.m. by Fr. Nelson Javier, T.O.R. Interment will be at Grandview Cemetery.

    To the family of Shirley you have my deepest condulences, Shirley an I went to Jr High and Altoona High together. I Loved her she was the nicest school friend you could want. I can still hearher laugh and voice. We lost touch never realized where she moved. Shirley thank you for your friendship. Please my friend rest in Gods Piece now. Your Friend Linda (Skipper) Nolan
