Obituary For Walter Carl Hurliman

Walter Carl Hurliman July 12, 1932 – March 7, 2023

Walter C. Hurliman, 90, of Altoona, passed away Tuesday at UPMC Harrisburg. Wally was born in Altoona, son of the late Gottlieb and Elizabeth (Wohlbruck) Hurliman. On March 23, 1956, he married Gloria J. Stoltz who preceded him in death on August 8, 2007. He is survived by three daughters: Gloria Pfeiffer of Altoona, Carla Jurcik (Frank) of New Cumberland, and Beth Hurliman of Altoona; a son, Jack Hurliman (Lisa) of Etters; seven grandchildren: Heather Faucon, Carl Jurcik, Stephanie Jurcik-Wiswell, Jonathan Walter Novack, Krista Hurliman, Laura Hurliman, and Alicia Hurliman and great-grandchildren, Taylor Smith, Ashton Smith, Hailey Faucon, Callie Jurcik, Ava Wiswell, Logan Wiswell, Anna Wiswell, and Addison Wiswell. Wally was also preceded in death by a son, Walter G. Hurliman on November 28, 1996. He was a 1950 graduate of Altoona High School and was a US Army Veteran of the Korean War. Wally retired in 1990 as a system technician from AT&T after 34 years of service. After retirement, he was a volunteer at the James E. Van Zandt VA Medical Center doing telephone repairs and upgrades. He was an avid sports fan, enjoyed gardening and was a PA Lottery enthusiast. Wally was a member of the Swiss Club, Bavarian Aid Society, Unter Uns, Catholic War Veterans, Heidelberg County Club, VFW, Cesare Battisti and Telephone Pioneers. The family would like to thank the staff of UPMC Harrisburg for the excellent care that Wally received. Friends will be received from 10 a.m. until noon and 2-4 p.m. on Saturday, March 11, 2023 at E. Merrill Smith Funeral Home, Inc., 2309 Broad Avenue, Altoona, PA 16601. Interment will be at Alto Reste Park Cemetery.
